Yamaha RD350/400 exhaust pipe spotters guide
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:59:01 PM »
I would like to make a thread with pictures and short descriptions of all the commercially available pipes for the Yamaha RD350/400 series.  I think it would be helpful and informative.  Especially considering that some of these pipes are no longer available.

Here is a start.  Please feel free to add more and I would like to update this post so that it becomes a complete list.

Edit:Updated pictures from the below posts to make the guide easier to read.  Thanks to all that posted pictures or info.

Edit: Also welcome any comments about how the pipes fit with stock center stand and stock foot pegs or rearsets.

Pipes are in alphabetical order by manufacturer with the following format.

#. Brand website; model of pipe if any or application model(s)

Spec II; RD400. Here is an older set of Spec II pipes, circa 1980, for a RD400.  I don't know if these were called a specific model (e.g. classis, F1, etc.) back then.  Coyote (picture source) notes that the two diffuser design is common to the Spec IIs.  Pictures also show two distinct features worth noting.  The bent roller chain master link welded on for the spring attachment and the cir-clip silencer construction.

Pictures: by owner Coyote

This picture show a side by side comparison between a DG RD400 pipe and a Spec II pipe. Great picture to help identify/differentiate these pipes. Notice how the Spec II pipe uses two divergent cones, and the DG just one.

20. Misc/Unidentified/Unpictured brands:

20A. TNT pipes

20B. Hot Bike engineering

20C. Bill Smith "Bleeder" pipes.

I'm guessing the name comes from the style where the stinger isn't aligned with the axis of the pipes.  That is the exhaust gasses bleed off through the stinger mounted to the pipe radially.

I was recently sent some information on these pipes via a pm from a member.  They were dated as late 80's early 90's era, and were called bleeder pipes.  Bill Smith from Nor-Cal made pipes like these.  "Good" lowend and "ok" top end power.

J&R's chrome mid 70's had a sticker at onetime that read "J&R Power Pipe" on the baffle. Baffle held in by circlip

an I like this idea for pipe ID

Bassanni's.  Maybe mid to late 70's.  Sectioned cones.  Seen here on my old 350 (sleeper with 250 bodywork).

Here's one from this side of the pond. Allspeed "small can" pipes, came in either chrome or black painted finish. Also came in a large can version. Now re-badged as Gibson's exhausts;

The end caps are aftermarket stainless items, standard are mild steel with a shorter outlet pipe. These pipes are still available new, and are very popular over here

Will see if I can find some pics of my old Microns.

Dusty

Those are some nice pipes MB How many hours did it take to build a set? My hands cramp just thinking about all of those welds you couldn't possibly get enough money for all of the work that goes into them.
